The Motril Feria week usual finishes with a firework display down on Poniente beach and this usually takes place around 11pm on the Monday evening after the Virgin of the Cabeza has been paraded around the town on her second outing of the year. Her first outing of course being at Easter.
Now, Monday 15th this year was a National holiday, The Assumption of the Virgin,, so, no one was really surprised to read in the official on-line brochure that the firework display was going to be held this year on the Tuesday 16th.
So was it? Oh no, how silly of us to even think that the Town Hall for once could get something right.
It happened around 11 pm on the Monday night and we missed it having all turned in for an early night. Such a disappointment as it really is a great night out if you are lucky enough to actually get there on the right night. Years past we have watched from the roof but these days it’s set to music and far better to be down on the sea front.
The atmosphere is something else. Lots of stalls set up selling bags, clothes, scarves, bangles, ear rings, beads and baubles. All sorts of everything. Senagalese (looky looky men) selling watches, belts, sunglasses, cds, designer bags, all copies and illegal.
And after it’s all over, everyone hits the ice cream parlours, Las Heladerias, and we sit and discuss the bits we liked best and whether or not it stood up to last year’s display. Had the council spent less money this year, and so on long past midnight. No one really wanting the evening to end.
Ah well. We shall just have to look forward to next year and we’ll know better than to trust the Town Hall’s Official Brochure this time!!!
