Ex-Minister of Defence, Federico Trillo, assumed diplomatic representation in London last May.
But reports say that tension in the embassy has increased since his arrival.
The ex-Defence Minister in the José María Aznar Government, Trillo made it clear, ‘I am a political ambassador. I think that is what is needed now’.
Trillo has changed 18 positions in the embassy, and forced the resignation of the Secretary General of the Chamber of Commerce, Belén Amat Martín, who had only been named the day before.
The post has been replaced by the Partido Popular deputy, Julieta de Micho, who reports say that since her arrival she has been acting as Cabinet Chief in the shadows.
One report in El País says the arrival of Trillo is transforming the embassy. ‘It seems that now that there are a high percentage of people from Opus Dei at the embassy events’.
One overheard phase from a regular in the Embassy is ‘They don’t go to mass, do they?’ On October the 12 there were even nuns in the Embassy. ‘I have never seen nuns in the embassy before’.
